Los AngelesNoise Ordinance & Quiet Hours
Last verified: July 6, 2026
Ordinances change and enforcement varies by jurisdiction. This is general information, not legal advice — always confirm details with the linked official source before relying on them.
Quiet hours
Weekdays: 10:00 PM – 7:00 AM
Weekends: 10:00 PM – 7:00 AM
Los Angeles's noise code is built around an ambient-plus-offset standard rather than a single flat quiet-hours rule — see decibelLimits.measurementNotes.
Decibel limits
LAMC does not set one flat residential number. Instead, under LAMC Sec. 111.03 and related sections, sound from a source generally may not exceed the presumed ambient noise level by more than 5 dBA on adjacent residential property, with a lower presumed ambient at night than during the day.
Governing ordinance
Los Angeles Municipal Code — Noise Regulation (Chapter XI) (LAMC Ch. XI, incl. Sec. 111.03)
Enforcement
LAPD Noise Enforcement Team · Los Angeles Police Department non-emergency line
Call LAPD's non-emergency line for an in-progress disturbance; chronic issues can be reported to the LAPD Noise Enforcement Team.
Los Angeles sits under California's broader landlord-tenant law — see the California state page for habitability and quiet-enjoyment protections that apply regardless of city.
