How to Tell If Noise Is Coming Through the Wall, Floor, or Window
Before you buy anything, figure out where the sound is actually getting in. A soundproofing product that's right for a window does almost nothing for a wall, and vice versa, so five minutes of diagnosis saves you from wasting money on the wrong fix.
Why this matters more than people think
Most apartment noise complaints assume the source is obvious ("it's my upstairs neighbor" or "it's the street"), but the path the sound takes to reach your ears isn't always where you'd guess. Bass from a neighbor's TV can travel through a shared wall's framing and re-emerge somewhere else in the room. Street noise can bypass a "solid" wall entirely and pour in through window gaps. Diagnosing the actual path is what tells you whether to spend on a door sweep, a window insert, or mass for a wall.

Test 1: the hand test
Walk the perimeter of the room while the noise is happening and lightly place your hand flat against the wall, floor, and window frame in turn.
- Wall or floor vibrating under your hand, even slightly, points to structural transmission — the sound is traveling through the building's framing, not just through the air.
- No vibration, but the sound is clearly louder near the window points to an air gap, not a structural path.
Test 2: the cover test
Temporarily block one surface at a time and listen for a change.
- Press a thick blanket or pillow flat against the window for a minute. If the noise drops noticeably, a meaningful amount is coming in through the window, usually around the frame or a worn seal, not through the glass itself.
- Do the same against the wall you suspect. A real drop points to a wall-transmission problem.
- No change from either points toward the floor or ceiling as the actual path.
Test 3: listen to the character of the sound
The type of sound is a strong clue on its own:

Test 4: time and location correlation
Notice when and where in the room the noise is worst.
- Louder specifically at certain hours that match a neighbor's schedule → source is very likely that neighbor, and the hand/cover tests above tell you which surface it's crossing.
- Louder near one specific corner or wall of the room, regardless of time → likely a structural weak point in that section, not a general building issue.
- Fairly constant regardless of time or position in the room → more likely an outside/ambient source like street traffic, which usually means windows and doors are the weak points.

What if the hand test and cover test point to different surfaces? Trust the cover test more for airborne noise (voices, traffic, music) and the hand test more for low-frequency rumble and impact noise. Bass in particular can make a wall vibrate even when the window is the primary entry point for the sound, so use both tests together rather than relying on just one.
Can noise come through more than one surface at once? Yes, and it's common. An older apartment with a shared wall and an aging window seal can leak noise through both. If cutting off one source only partially helps, treat the next most likely surface based on these same tests.
